Many years ago before I started HotRun I worked with a consultant that would threaten candidates if they took a counter offer they would be fired by their employer in less than a year. He used to guarantee it and raise his voice before he got off the phone with the candidate and say "Counter offers Bad!". We just shook our heads at him and thankfully he's no longer in recruiting but I have to admit he was on to something. The acceptance of counter offers sets up candidates for a future of uncertainty, unease and lack of trust for both the employee and employer. I'd never guarantee you are going to be fired or let go by your employer because of it but certainly the chances increase greatly and it's just not the right way to negotiate a promotion or raise. Recruiters and employers hope there are serious reasons you are looking for a new career not to leverage your existing one.
